Type of infection

Astroviruses are a diverse group of small, structured RNA viruses.

Sources of infection

  1. Astrovirus infection is more common in young children but can infect all ages.

Complications

  1. Dehydration is the major complication, but generally less common than for rotavirus, norovirus, or sapovirus.

Duration of illness

  1. Typically 2-3 days.

Treatment

  1. Fluid replacement and correction of electrolyte abnormalities if needed.
  2. Antibiotics do not help and may make diarrhea worse.
